Looking for a simple 3 ingredient whiskey cocktail that’s sugar free and delicious? Try this keto old fashioned cocktail!
An Old Fashioned is a classic, timeless cocktail made with bourbon, sugar, water, and bitters. It’s often considered one of the earliest cocktails ever created, long before the invention of modern mixology. While there are many variations of this drink, the original recipe is still a favourite among whiskey lovers. Hence the name – Old Fashioned.
Those of you who are faithful followers of the keto diet might be wondering whether or not the Old Fashioned is a keto-friendly drink.
Well, fear not!
I’ll show you a wonderful keto version of the recipe that will allow you to indulge in your favourite cocktail any time you want!
I’ll also answer some of the questions you might have on whether or not whiskey is keto-approved.
Let’s get right to it!

What does an Old Fashioned taste like?
The Old Fashioned has a rich and complex flavor that can be enjoyed by whiskey lovers of all levels. As I mentioned earlier, the drink is made with bourbon, sugar, water, and bitters.
The sweetness from the sugar is balanced out by the bitterness of the bitters, and the bourbon gives it a smooth and smoky finish. It’s an experience that you definitely don’t want to miss out on!
Is bourbon OK for keto diet?
Yes, bourbon is perfectly OK for the keto diet. In fact, it’s one of the best spirits you can drink while on keto because it has zero carb count and packs a lot of flavours.
Just make sure you don’t add any sugar or sweeteners to the bourbon as that can significantly increase the carb content.
If you do want that extra depth of flavor, stick to sugar-free mixers like club soda or diet tonic water. That way, you can enjoy the full taste and benefits of your favourite bourbon without worry.

Is an Old Fashioned keto?
A traditional glass of Old Fashioned is not keto-approved, as it contains sugar. If you’re wondering how many carbs are in an old fashioned, you’d be shocked that a regular glass of old fashioned can contain 10g of net carbs per glass!
So as you can see, it’s quite easy to exceed your daily carb limit.
However, I’ve got a great keto version of the recipe for you that has just under 2g of net carbs. I use only sugar-free ingredients so that you can enjoy that delicious Old Fashioned flavor without breaking your keto diet.
Win-win!
Can you drink straight whiskey on keto?
Yes, you can drink straight whiskey on the keto diet. Whiskey by itself has no carbs at all.
The only thing to watch out for is that if it’s flavoured or has a sugary mixer added to it – those will contain carbs and should be avoided.
If you’re unsure about whether there are any hidden sugars in your whiskey, check the ingredient list or contact the distillery for more information.
As long as you stick to unflavoured, unsweetened whiskeys, you’re good to go!
Are angostura bitters keto?
Most of the calories in bitters come from it’s alcohol content (which is 45%). There are no added sugar in bitters therefore they are ok for keto – in small quantities.
Bitters contain 12 calories per 1/2 teaspoon and 0g net carbs so keep that in mind when using angostura bitters in cocktails.
What you’ll need for a low carb old fashioned:
1 1/2 oz whiskey bourbon
1 tbsp warm water
1 tsp erythritol or another keto sweetener – Make sure it’s powdered! Granular ones won’t dissolve that easily.
3 dashes bitters (angostura)
Ice
How to make a keto old fashioned bourbon cocktail:
Into a rocks glass, add in the warm water, erythritol, and 3 dashes of Angostura bitters.
Stir until the erythritol is fully dissolved.
Place a large ice cube in the glass and then pour in your bourbon over the ice. Stir once again so that all the flavours are mixed together.
Garnish with an orange slice if you want to give it that classic Old Fashioned look.
Drink up!
