Will alcohol kick you out of ketosis?

Pure alcohol like vodka, gin, and whiskey will not kick you out of ketosis as they contain zero net carbs.

However, if you’re having cocktails, you should remember that they often contain mixers such as juice, soft drinks, or tonic water.

These mixers are a big no-no as they are full of sugar and carbs that can interfere with ketosis.

As long as you stick to a few, low-carb drinks, you’ll be able to enjoy your alcohol without worry.

The recommended limit of alcohol consumption per day is 1 drink for women and 2 for men and having more than 2 standard drinks per day has been linked to weight gain in women is particular. source

What can I drink at a bar on keto?

If you’re looking for keto-friendly drinks at a bar, there are plenty of options to choose from. Here are a few of my favourites:

  • Skinny Mojito
  • Low Carb Margarita
  • Keto Paloma
  • Moscow Mule
  • Vodka Soda
  • Dry White Wine
  • Shots
  • Dry Martini
  • White Claw
  • Old Fashioned
  • Gin Soda

These are all perfect for anyone following a ketogenic diet. Just be sure to avoid any high-carb mixers.

Tip: If you’re serious about keto, you might want to try what I’ve been doing for years:

I carry a small sugar-free syrup bottle in my purse to add to cocktails and drinks such as coffee, shakes etc. This enables me to enjoy most ready made drinks and cocktails without adding any extra carbs.

(BONUS: USE KETOMIL FOR 10% OFF YOUR ORDER)

Which cocktail ingredients to avoid on keto?

When it comes to keto cocktails, there are a few ingredients you’ll want to avoid.

These include sugar syrups like agave or honey, fruit juices, and carbonated drinks like sweetened soda or tonic water. All of these ingredients are high in carbs and will throw you out of ketosis.

If you’re looking for keto-friendly cocktails, stick to drinks made with simple ingredients like vodka, gin, whiskey, and seltzer water.

You can also use low-carb mixers like diet soda or unsweetened iced tea.

Best Keto Drinks & Cocktails to Order at a Bar:

1. Skinny Mojito

This refreshing cocktail is perfect for summer and can be ordered at a bar quite easily by requesting that the bartender skips any added sugar and sugar syrups and instead adds in a packet of stevia.

The keto mojito is made with lime juice, mint leaves, artificial sweeteners, and hard liquor such as rum which are all almost zero carbs and will help you stay in ketosis while enjoying a drink.

Tip: I always carry some sweetener packets in my purse as they are so tiny and often bars don’t have any sweeteners. I get these from coffee shops but you can also buy them in the store.

2. Low Carb Margarita

A classic margarita consists of three ingredients – tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice.

Ask the bartender to skip the liqueur, add more sugar-free lime juice, and some sweetener and you’ve got yourself a low-carb Margarita that’s also keto friendly.

If you really want to elevate the flavours of your Margarita, don’t forget to rim the glass with some salt! I also like to request for some muddled Jalapeno for a spicy margarita.

3. Low Carb Paloma

To order a keto paloma at a bar, all you need to do is ask for a shot off tequila, soda water, lime juice and a splash of fresh grapefruit juice (make sure they don’t add too much grapefruit juice or use the bottled kind as it’s quite high in carbs.)

4. Moscow Mule

If you’re lucky enough that the bar you’re at stocks diet ginger beer (not many bars have it, but it’s worth a ask) you can order a keto friendly Moscow mule.

Simply ask for a shot of vodka, diet ginger beer, a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a wedge of lime to order this delicious cocktail.

They may even have the copper mugs that Moscow mules are traditionally served in, don’t be afraid to ask!

5. Vodka Soda

This is a simple and easy drink to make, and it’s great for anyone on keto.

A vodka soda is one of the easiest low carb vodka drinks to order at a bar since it’s just 2 ingredients and pretty much every single bar will stock these two.

Just ask for vodka over ice with a splash of soda water. No sugar or carbs here! For some extra zing, top it with a lemon or lime wedge.

Feel free to swap the soda water for any other sugar free drink the bar stocks such as diet coke.

6. Shots

If you’re looking for a quick, keto way to get your booze fix, there’s nothing better than shots. The only ingredient here is pure alcohol, so you can be sure that you won’t kick yourself out of ketosis.

Choose your favourite liquor and take your shots straight up or on the rocks. Be it whiskey, gin, tequila, rum, or vodka, they’re all zero carbs!

7. Dry White Wine

A dry wine is a wine that has less than 1% residual sugar of the wine’s total volume. Simply put – these are wines that are less sweet, but also have fewer carbs (usually less than 3-4g per glass).

Some of the best dry white wines for keto are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio.

8. Dry Martini

If you’re looking for a sophisticated keto drink (or if you’re simply a fan of James Bond), look no further than the Dry Martini.

Although not as complex as Agent 007’s Vesper Martini, this keto version of the drink is made with gin and dry vermouth, and it’s perfect for a classy night out.

9. White Claw

You may be wondering ”can you really drink white claw on keto?” Well you actually can!

Despite white claws fruity and sweet flavour it actually only contains just 100 and 2g carbs in the 12 oz (355ml can).

Again, moderation is key and you cant be downing 10 of these at that might just kick you out of ketosis.

10. Old Fashioned

To order an old fashioned, ask for bourbon, angostura bitters, a splash of water and ice cubes. If you’re feeling extra fancy, ask them to top your drink off with some dried orange peels.

11. Gin Soda

Before starting the keto diet, gin and tonic was always my go to drink to order at a bar but since tonic is super high in carbs, I can no longer have it. (a 12oz can contains 32g carbs!)

So that is why I now opt for a gin and soda water. I ask for a shot of  gin, lemon juice, a small splash of tonic water for taste and top with soda water.

12. Keto Mimosa

While you can’t enjoy classic mimosas since orange juice is incredibly high in net carbs. (4 oz  of OJ which is a traditional serve for a mimosa contains 13 g of net carbs)

You could ask the bartender to swap the orange juice for a sugar free orange soda. Most champagne contains 0g net carbs so if you can get a sugar free mixer it will keep the carb count low.

The keto drinks I’ve mentioned here are just a few of the many keto alcoholic drinks you can order at a bar. If you’re looking for more options, try a low-carb Ginger Whiskey Soda, keto White Russian, or even a Red Sangria using dry, red wine, and zero-calorie sweetener!

Just because you’re following a keto diet doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the fun. There are plenty of options when it comes to low carb cocktails to order at the bar – you just need to know what to ask for.
